New York Today: A Convention Begins
Good morning on this stifling Monday.
Enter the elephants: The Republican National Convention begins today.
(The Democratic donkeys gather next week.)
This week’s festivities are taking place in Cleveland ― next week’s will be in Philadelphia ― but let’s not forget that the race features two New York residents going head-to-head.
And it’s the first time in 72 years that that has happened.
Of the nearly 2,500 delegatesattending the Republican National Convention, there are 89 from New York who are pledged to Donald J. Trump.
They were chosen by our state’s party, the New York Republican State Committee, and not by Mr. Trump, according to Ballotpedia, an online encyclopedia of American politics and elections.
But they were awarded to him after he won our Republican primary in April.
Donald Trump Jr. is among the 89. He’s backing his dad.
Yet not everyone is; several high-profile Republicans around the country have decided not to show up.
No matter, though.
There will be plenty of celebrities and business leaders there to keep Mr. Trump company.

Immigration, policing, marriage and criminal justice overhaul ― to name just a few.
Today’s theme at the convention is “Make America Safe Again,” and our former mayor, Rudolph W. Giuliani, will be speaking.
今回取り上げるのは、"high-profile"です。
LDOCEで調べてみると、"attracting a lot of public attention, usually deliberately"とありました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版(大修館)では、「(仕事などが)注目を集める」とあり、"high profile"とハイフン無しだと、「高姿勢、注目されること」とありました。
もともと、"profile"には、「横顔、プロフィール、縦断面、グラフ」などの意味があります。「(新聞、テレビなどの)(人、集団、企業などの)素描紹介」という意味もあり、そのような記事は大衆の注目を集める効果があるため、そういった意味も含まれてるのではと思いました。
"have a high profile"で、「注目を集めている、脚光を浴びている」という意味になります。
因みに、反意語は"low-profile"で、"keep a low profile"で、「低姿勢を保つ、目立たないようにおとなしくしている」となります。(Akim)
