throw a spanner in the works

Brexit throws 'spanner in the works' of global growth
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said the UK's decision to leave the European Union has "thrown a spanner in the works" of its global growth forecast.
Instead of predicting 3.2% growth in 2016, the IMF's World Economic Outlook (WEO) now expects only 3.1%.

今回取り上げる表現は,“throw a spanner in the works”です。

Merriam-Websterには,“to cause something to not go as planned”とあり,『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)には,「(進行を)妨害する」と記載されていました。

諸説ありますが,The Phrase Finderによると,“the calamitous effects of throwing a spanner into the gears and pistons of an engine”と載っていました。 (Nao)
