Ice on the Beach
KAILUA, Hawaii--Only an academic could take the joy out of a cup of ice flakes soaked in fruit syrup.
中略
Japanese immigrants opened small stores to serve plantation workers in the early 1900s, some of which sold shave ice. By the 1950s, shave ice was sold regularly at many Japanese-owned mom-and-pop stores like M. Matsumoto Grocery Store on the north shore of Oahu. Now operating as Matsumoto’s Shave Ice, the place has become so popular that waits can stretch past a half-hour.

この表現をLDOCEで調べてみると、“a mom-and-pop business is owned and managed by a family or a husband and wife”と定義されていました。 (ninetails)
