北海道・中富良野町の「ファーム富田」では, 今年も一面に広がるラベンダーが訪れる人々を魅了しています。現在咲いている早咲きの品種は, ７月末にかけて見頃が続くようです。

People view a carpet of lavender in full bloom at Farm Tomita in Nakafurano, Hokkaido. A total of 60,000 plants, members of four varieties that bloom at different times from June to early August, exist at the farm. The lavender now in flower is an early-blooming variety and will be at its best through the end of this month.

今回の記事では「[植]ラベンダー(芳香のあるシソ科の常緑半低木)」として用いられていますが, 『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)を調べると, “lavender” を使った意外な熟語が記載されていました。

上記の辞典によると “lay up in lavender” で「他日の用に大切に保管する」とありました。表現の由来を確認することはできませんでしたが, ラベンダーの香りは虫よけや芳香剤にも使われることから, 「状態を保つ」表現に用いられたのではないかと思いました。(Cayu)
