Curtain to fall on Parco Theater, for now

By Erika Noguchi / Yomiuri Shimbun Staff Writer
The curtain will temporarily fall on Parco Theater in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, in August when the building housing it is demolished and rebuilt. The theater, which opened in 1973, is known for its innovative productions. I took this opportunity to speak with people involved in many of its famous performances.

The theater, with its distinctive deep red seats and carpet, is on the ninth floor of Parco Part 1, a 10-minute walk from JR Shibuya Station. The building is popular for its fashion brands.

With a seating capacity of 458, the medium-size theater has a luxurious and somewhat nostalgic atmosphere. The stage is set low at about 60 centimeters from the floor, providing audiences with a more intimate atmosphere.

中略

Since 2000, Parco Theater has also functioned as the first big stage for young playwrights who have honed their art at fringe theaters, such as those in Shimokitazawa in Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward. Successful playwrights and directors like Yukiko Motoya, Keishi Nagatsuka, and Tomohiro Maekawa spread their wings from the Parco Theater. Motoya won the Akutagawa Prize for a novel this year.

本日気になった表現は “hone” です。

リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で調べると, 名詞「ホーン(微粉状の砂岩)」, 動詞「ホーンでとぎ上げる」という意味から転じて, 「磨き上げる」とありました。Oxford-Dictionaries.comには “refine or perfect (something) over a period of time” と定義され, “Some of the best players in the world honed their skills playing street football.” という例が挙げられていました。

同段落には “spread their wings” 「自分の能力[手腕]を十分に発揮する」とも記されていることから, この劇場で数々の劇作家が大成したということがわかります。(Cayu)
