Ogasawara birds make a comeback

With the fifth anniversary Wednesday of the registration of the Ogasawara Islands on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage list, positive effects have been seen in aspects of the islands’ environmental conservation, according to the Environment Ministry and other sources.

One of the achievements is a great increase in the number of Akagashira Karasubato, or red-headed wood pigeons, an endangered species, on the Tokyo islands dubbed the “Galapagos of the Orient.”

The species is known for its burgundy head. The birds previously lived on the islands without humans or predators. Since the 19th century, however, pet cats brought by settlers turned feral and began to prey on the pigeons. This resulted in depleting the number of the birds to about 40 at one point, leaving them on the brink of extinction.

In 2005, the ministry and the Tokyo Veterinary Medical Association began a project to capture the feral cats on the islands and try to find owners for them.

今回取り上げるのは “burgundy head” です。 どのような頭なのでしょうか。“burgundy” を『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べてみますと、大文字で始まるBurgundyは「ブルゴーニュ（フランスの南東部地方）」小文字で始まるburgundyは不可算名詞で「ブルゴーニュ産のワイン」とありました。

小文字にするとその地方のワインを表すということが意外に思いました。この意味から考えて、“burgundy head”はそのワインの色をした頭をさしているのではないかと思われました。Cambridge Dictionaries Onlineでburgundyを調べてみますと “a dark reddish-purple colour, like the colour of red wine” という意味が見つかりました。日本語では赤と表現していますが、英語では黒ずんだ暗い赤紫色、暗紅色であることがわかりました。(aqua)
