Britons Express Serious #Regrexit As Reality Of Brexit Becomes Clear

As global stock markets tumbled and the value of the pound plummeted to a 30-year low following the United Kingdom’s vote to leave the European Union, it appears that some people are now having serious regrets.

The #REGREXIT hashtag began trending on Twitter on Saturday morning, just as a petition calling for the country to hold a second referendum on its membership in the European Union passed 2.5 million signatures.

今回取り上げるのは、“Regrexit”という表現です。「イギリスのEU離脱」を“Britain”「イギリス」と“exit”「離脱」という2つの単語を合わせた“Brexit”で表すことがありますが、今回の表現もこれと同じ造語です。

“Regrexit”は“regret”「後悔する」と“exit”「離脱」を組み合わせた造語で、「EU離脱に票を入れた人の後悔」を表しています。また、イギリス議会のホームページには300万以上もの「国民投票のやり直し」を求める署名が集まっているようで、議会での審議に必要な10万人の署名を大きく上回りました。(ninetails)
