Godzilla stomps way through Kawasaki in blockbuster film

KAWASAKI--Godzilla returns to Japan, trampling through Kawasaki’s Musashi-Kosugi district in Nakahara Ward and leveling skyscrapers and everything in its path.

It’s a gripping scene from a trailer for “Godzilla Resurgence,” the latest film in the long-running series for the “King of Monsters,” which will open nationwide on July 29.

The much-anticipated “made in Japan” Godzilla movie was written by Evangelion anime series creator Hideaki Anno, who also serves as general director, and directed by Shinji Higuchi, whose past works include the two-part, live-action feature film adaptation of the “Attack on Titan” manga series.

The Godzilla production team requested the cooperation of Kawasaki city officials for location shooting about a year ago. The actual landscapes were shot in and around the Musashi-Kosugi area during the summer and autumn of 2015.

According to Toho Co., the film’s producer and distributer, the latest Godzilla stands 118.5 meters tall, the largest Godzilla in the 62-year history of the film series and surpassing its predecessor featured in a 2014 Hollywood adaptation.

With the Musashi-Kosugi neighborhood having seen a building boom of high-rise structures in recent years, the battle sequence in the trailer looks compelling and realistic.

“There will be a battle taking place in Musashi-Kosugi, but we can’t disclose the details,” a Toho representative said.

Other specifics, such as the landing point of Godzilla, its route to Musashi-Kosugi and other filming locations, also remain undisclosed, the representative said.

Godzilla is famous worldwide,” a city official in charge of supporting the location shooting said. “We are glad that such a major film was shot in the city.”

Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi and Satomi Ishihara have been cast in the lead roles.

今回注目した表現は、“gripping scene”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第3版、三省堂)を引いたところ、“gripping”には「〈物語などが〉人の心をつかむ、興味を引く」という意味があることが分かりました。

Collins Dictionary.comでは、“able to hold the interest or attention of someone”と定義されていました。

“grip”という単語はご存知のように「(物を)握る」という意味がありますが、「〈人など〉をとりこにする」という意味もあります。日本語でも「人の心をつかむ作品」というような表現をしますが、英語でも同じ感覚で“grip”を用いるうようです。(Blue Sky)

「人の注意を引く」というような意味の“grip”が過去にも取り上げられておりました。ご覧ください。
