７月３０日に行われる参議院選挙が投票権が１８歳に引き下げられてから初めての選挙ということで、「１８歳になったら投票へ」という垂れ幕が高校にも掲げられます。
Calling first-time voters
Workers put the finishing touches on banners that will be used by the Kanagawa Prefecture election administration committee to call on high school-aged voters to cast their ballots in the upcoming House of Councillors election, in which the minimum age for eligible voters will be 18 for the first time. The banners — 4 meters long and 1.2 meters wide — bear the phrase, “When you turn 18, go vote!” These banners are expected to be hung in school gymnasiums and other places.
今回注目した表現は、“put the finishing touches on”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)で“touch”を引いたところ、名詞の用法の第４義に「(筆・鉛筆などでの)一書き、一筆；(作品などの)仕上げ」とありました。また、同じ項目に“put the finishing touches to [on] A”で「Aに最後の仕上げを施す」と載っていました。さらに、“finish”の第３義にも「仕上げ、仕上がり、磨き」という意味があり、こちらにも“finishing touches”で「(絵画・仕事の)最後の仕上げ」と載っておりました。似た意味の単語を並べることによって「本当に最後の仕上げである」という意味を強めているのではないかと思います。
Macmillan Dictionary.comも確認したところ、“the last small details that make something complete”と定義されていました。最後のちょっとした仕上げをする際に用いられる表現のようです。(Blue Sky)
