先程と同様の記事から表現をもう一つ。偉大な記録を打ち立て,これまでにMVPや首位打者などの個人タイトルを獲得してきたイチロー選手も,メジャーの頂点にだけは未だに立つことができていません。しかし一方でサムライジャパンの一員として参加したWBCでは世界一の称号を手に入れています。これを記事ではchampionships have not entirely eluded himで表現しています。
すでに過去の記事でも紹介されていますが,eludeには「〈追跡者敵危険など〉を (うまく)かわす, のがれる」という意味の他に「〈望むもの〉が手に入れられない」という意味があります(『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館)。

記事の表現でもわかるように,この場合の主語は「望むもの」になります。「世界一の称号から見放されているわけではない」を表すのにchampionships have not entirely eluded himという表現は私には出てこないと思い,改めて採り上げてみました。(Koyamamoto)
