既に何度か取り上げられている話題になりますが、パリでの水害に関する記事からです。
Paris museum reopens as French floods slowly ease

PARIS (AP) — The riverside Grand Palais exhibition hall in Paris reopened Sunday as floodwaters slowly receded from the French capital, after the worst floods in three decades caused the Seine River to burst its banks.
Other regions remained at risk, notably parts of Normandy, as digging out began in villages and towns around the French capital.
The Louvre Museum, several Paris train stations and roads remained closed. Quayside restaurants along the Seine were still engulfed in water Sunday and tourist boats were unable to pass under bridges, a blow to the riverside economy.
The glass-topped Grand Palais, built for the 1900 World’s Fair and currently hosting an exhibit by avant-garde Chinese artist Huang Yong Ping among several others, opened again Sunday after closing Friday because of flood risks.

今回取り上げるのはavant-gardeです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べてみますと、名詞の意味では「（the~）（単数または複数扱い）前衛派（の芸術家、作家たち）、アバンギャルド（全体）」、形容詞の意味では「（特に芸術、文学で）前衛的な、前衛派の」という意味があることがわかりました。LDOCEには “avant-garde music, literature etc is extremely modern and often seems strange or slightly shocking” とありました。語源が気になったので調べてみました。英辞郎on the WEBによりますと、語源は"before the guard"という意味をもつフランス語からきているそうです。
