MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Prince died of an overdose of fentanyl, a powerful opioid painkiller that is up to 50 times more potent than heroin, autopsy results released Thursday show.

The findings confirm suspicions that opioids played a role in the death of the superstar musician, who was found dead April 21 at his Minneapolis-area estate.

It was not immediately clear whether Prince had a prescription for the drug and, if not, how he obtained it. At least one friend has said he suffered from intense knee and hip pain from many years of stage performances.

今回取り上げるのは、見出しにあるopioidです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べてみましたが、載っていませんでした。Cambridge Dictionaries Onlineでは “any drug that has an effect similar to opium, such as morphine”という意味が載っていました。
opiumが何かわかりませんでしたので続いて調べてみますと、　“a drug made from the seeds of a poppy (= red flower) that is used to control pain or to help people sleep. It can make a person who takes it want more of it and is sometimes used by people as an illegal drug for pleasure” とあり、アヘンであることがわかりました。最後にスマートフォンに内蔵されているジーニアス英和辞典MX増補版for iOSでopioidを調べてみました。「オピオイド（中枢神経抑制作用を持ち、少量で鎮痛作用を示し、モルヒネに代表されるような作用を示す薬剤をいう）」とありました。(aqua)
