今回気になった表現は，“rust belt”です。そのまま捉えると，「錆びついたベルト」となりますが，しっくりきません。では，ここではどのような意味で用いられているのか調べてみました。Dictionary.comによると，“the heavily industrial area of the northeastern U.S. containing the older industries and factories”と記載されていました。アメリカの北部の工業地帯であることが分かりました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館書店）も確認したところ，「ラスト地帯，さび地帯」とありました。また，昔は重工業で栄えた今は衰退した米国北部の工業地帯とも載っていました。ラスト地帯について詳しく書かれたサイトのＵＲＬを貼りました。ご参考までにご覧ください。(Nao)
