今回取り上げる表現は、見出しにある” ace in the hole”です。「穴の中のエースのカード」などの意味の分からない訳を思い浮かべました。

Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、” a plan or piece of information kept secret until it becomes necessary to use it”とのことでした。ちなみに、”an ace in the hole”はアメリカ英語で、イギリスでは主に”an ace up one’s sleeve”と使われているようです。

また「ジーニアス英和辞典」（第五版、大修館）で調べたところ、「奥の手、切り札」と載っておりました。

つまり” Clinton's ace in the hole: Obama”は、「クリントン氏の切り札はオバマ大統領」のような訳になるかと思います。
