Throngs of people fill the street to cheer Leicester City players as they parade on an open-top bus through Leicester, England, on Monday to celebrate the Foxes’ fairy-tale first Premier League title in its 132-year history. Japan and Leicester forward Shinji Okazaki, pictured left, was seen waving to the crowd. British media said the parade attracted about 250,000 people. Leicester, which started the season as a 5,000-1 long shot for the title, finished 10 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal.

今回取り上げるのは、“open-top bus”という表現です。この表現をCambridge Dictionaries Onlineで調べてみると、“An open-top car, bus, etc. does not have a roof, or has a roof that you can fold back”と記載されており、また『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)では「屋根のない」などとありました。皆さんもテレビなどでパレードの際に選手がバスの2階から手を振っている光景を目にしたことがあると思いますが、その「屋根を取り払ったバス」のことを“open-top bus”は指しています。(ninetails)
