BOJ’s Kuroda sees room for additional easing

TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Bank of Japan Gov. Haruhiko Kuroda said Friday that he sees sufficient room for further monetary easing by the central bank to support the Japanese economy, which faces downside risks including financial market instability.

“There is no doubt that ample space for additional monetary easing ... is available to the bank” in terms of quantity, quality and interest rates, Kuroda said in a speech at a seminar hosted by the Research Institute of Japan, a Jiji Press affiliate.

“To be clear, I am not saying that the bank will stand pat” until it confirms the effects of its negative interest rate policy introduced in February.

The policy is designed to enhance the BOJ’s “quantitative and qualitative” easing regime launched in April 2013.

The BOJ “will take monetary policy measures in a timely, forward-looking manner” in order to achieve its 2 percent inflation target, Kuroda said.
