Dozens of Russian athletes who competed at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, including at least 15 medal winners, were part of a state-run doping program, The New York Times reported on Thursday.
The report is broadly consistent with revelations by an independent World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) commission last November of widespread state-sponsored doping in Russia, which led to a ban on the country competing in international athletics competitions. Unless that ban is lifted, Russian athletics competitors will miss the Rio Olympics in Brazil, set to run Aug. 5-21.

今回取り上げるのはtaintedです。taintを『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べてみますと、他動詞で「1（普通は受身で）（水、空気など）をよごす、汚染する（with）、（食べ物）を腐らす 2（人、行為など）を汚染する、（名声など）を汚（けが）す（by 、with）」という意味が見つかりました。名詞の項目には「（道徳的な）腐敗、墜落」とありましたので、ただ汚染されたという意味だけではなく、道徳的な部分が欠けていることを含んでいるのではないかと考えられます。LDOCEには “if something bad taints a situation or person, it makes the person or situation seem bad” という意味と “to damage something by adding an unwanted substance to it”という意味が載っていました。
