Leroy VAP adapting to expected ‘permanently high’ salmon prices
Leroy Seafood Group saw strong first quarter results for 2016, though the driving force behind them -- soaring salmon spot prices -- have caused slashes to the margins of its value-added processing segment.
Revenue in the segment was up 17% from NOK 425 million in Q1 2015, to NOK 498m in Q1 2016.
However, operating margin was down from 4.3% to 2.7%. "There is still considerable room for improvement, including in capacity utilisation within a number of the entities," Leroy said; something it has reiterated through past quarterly reports.
"The group's processing entities are adapting to the expectation of permanently high raw material prices," it added.
Leroy now operates three salmonid processing plants; Leroy Fossen and Smogen -- the largest smokehouse in Norway and largest processor in Sweden, respectively -- and a 50% stake in Rode Beheer, in the Netherlands. It doubled capacity at Fossen and Smogen in 2013/2014.
