on the move

aquaさんと同じ記事からです。2019年, 果してニューヨークの空で水星を観測することはできるのでしょうか。

New York Today: Mercury on the Move

Greetings, earthlings, on this blustery Monday.

Look up, New York: Mercury is traversing the sun this morning.

Astronomers refer to this as the Mercury transit, and it will continue until 2:42 p.m.

The last time Mercury zipped across the sun was in 2006, and it won’t happen again until 2019, said Jason Kendall, a professor of astronomy and physics at William Paterson University who is a board member at the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York.

“These are very rare events, and it’s even more rare that we get to watch the whole thing,” he said. “The next one might be visible, but it surely won’t be visible from New York.”

本日取り上げる表現は “on the move” です。

はじめに『新英和大辞典』には, 「1. 始終移動して 2. <物事が>進行[進展]して, 進歩的で, 活動的で」と記載され, “He is always on the move.” 「彼はちっともじっとしていない」という例文が挙げられています。

続いてOxford Advanced Leader's Dictionary( 8th edition )で調べると, “be on the move” という成句が示され, “1. To be travelling from place to place”, “2. To be moving; to be going somewhere” と記されていました。

つまり今回の “on the move” は, 本文中の “Mercury is traversing the sun this morning.” (水星が太陽面を通過中)を指し, 「地球上から活発な動きがみられる水星」を “Mercury on the move” と表現したのだと思います。(Cayu)
