How to place Olympic flame in Tokyo?
More than four years before the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, a team established by the central government, the Tokyo metropolitan government and the Tokyo organizing committee is discussing how to set up the Olympic cauldron at the Games’ main venue.
Chaired by Toshiaki Endo, minister in charge of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, the working team was launched in March to discuss where to place the Olympic cauldron in the new National Stadium.
The team will first roughly decide where the cauldron will be set up and from where its flame will be lit.
Japan will be put to the test in its hosting of the 2020 Games, and the placement of the cauldron — the symbol of the Olympic and Paralympic Games — will be key to setting the mood for the event.

今回取り上げるのは the Olympic cauldron です。LDOCEで調べてみますと “a large round metal pot for boiling liquids over a fire” という意味が見つかり、大きい鍋であることがわかりました。その下に載っていた例には “a witch's cauldron” とありましたので、witchとつけると、魔女がぐつぐつと何かを煮込んでいるあの鍋のイメージがわきました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べてみますと、名詞で「大がま、大なべ」とありました。前に the Olympic がつくと聖火台となるようです。日本語では「台」ということばで表すのに対し、英語では「鍋」ということばで表すということが意外でした。(aqua)
