今回取り上げるのは、“flank”という表現です。この単語をLDOCEで調べてみると、“to be on both sides of someone or something”と定義されていました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4』(大修館書店)でも確認してみると、「〜の側面に(〜を)配置する〔with, by〕《通例受身》」と記載されていました。また、名詞でも「横腹、脇腹」といった意味があると分かりました。今回の記事でも、写真を通してオバマ大統領と横に並んで電話を受けているスーザン・ライス国家安全保障担当補佐官の姿を見ることができます。(ninetails)
