Plum trees bloom at Kairakuen, regarded as one of the nation’s three finest gardens, on the first day of a plum festival in Mito on Saturday. Visitors saw about 3,000 trees that were halfway to full bloom — harbingers of an early spring. According to the park’s information center, many of the flowers will be at full bloom from late this month to early March, though the festival continues until the end of March.
