少し考えれば想像がつくような気もしますが，スターバックスのコーヒーに含まれる砂糖の量に関する記事がThe Telegraphにありました。Joeは主にアメリカ英語で「コーヒー」の意味（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。これはOld Black Joeというアメリカの民謡に由来するようです。「英辞郎 on the WEB」には「同名のFosterの曲からで、20世紀初頭の特に海軍で使われるようになり、これを略したjoeは1931年の"Reserve Officer's Manual"にも記載されている」という説明もありました。イギリスの代表的な情報サイトでなぜこの表現が用いられたかはわかりませんが，面白い表現ですので押さえておこうと思います。（Koyamamoto）

It’s just been reported that - shock, horror - the high street coffee giants are serving hot drinks with a lot of sugar in them. Specifically the finger is being pointed at Costa and Starbucks and the "staggering" 20-25 spoonfuls of sugar found in trendy chai and hot chocolate drinks. More than a third even had more sugar in them than Coca-Cola - a drink that famously contains over nine teaspoons of the white stuff.
…Health organisations grumble that the coffee shop chains are trying to dupe us by hiding the amount of sugar in their drinks - but which of us can honestly stick our hands up and say that we’re surprised there’s a lot of sugar in a super-duper extra-large hot chocolate? If it sounds sweet and tastes sweet then, yup, it probably does contain a shed-load of the sweet stuff. Black coffee has negligible sugar content, but if you're going to add syrup, the clue’s in the name. All those splashes of caramel and vanilla flavouring are going to significantly affect the sugar content of your cup of Joe.
