台湾南部で6 日未明に発生した地震により、複数の建物が倒壊し、未だ120人以上ががれきの中に取り残されている状況です。
Taiwan is in the so-called "Ring of Fire," an area in the Pacific Ocean where intense tectonic plate movement causes frequent earthquakes.
"Taiwan is very used to earthquakes and tremors, but this is far more significant than the island has seen in quite a while," Elise Hu, an NPR correspondent who was in Taipei when the quake hit, told CNN.

取り上げるのは“tectonic plate”です。
“tectonic”には「《地》地質構造の；地殻変動の[による]」（『ジーニアス英和辞典』）という意味があり、“tectonic plate”で「《地》プレート《地球再表層の岩板》」となります。Macmillan Dictionaryには“one of the very large areas into which the Earth's surface broken up and which move against each other”と定義されていました。記事の“intense tectonic plate movement”は「激しい地殻変動」と訳せると思います。
また、地球の表面は何枚かの岩板から成り、それらが移動し互いに作用することで地震や火山活動を引き起こすと説明される学説を“plate tectonics”「プレートテクトニクス」と呼びます。
Online Etymology Dictionaryによれば、地学の意味での“tectonic”は後から生まれたもので、もともとは1650年代に"of or relating to building or construction”という意味で始まりました。"to make" を意味するPIE (印欧祖語)の*teks- を語源とし、これは“texture”の語源でもあると言われています。(bookmark)
