This year, Chinese New Year – The Year of the Monkey – begins on Monday February 8 and lasts until Jan 27th, 2017.
The new year, also known as the Spring Festival, is marked by the lunisolar Chinese calendar, so the date changes from year to year.
The festivities usually start the day before the New Year and continue until the Lantern Festival, the 15th day of the new year.
ここで取り上げるのは“lunisolar”です。手持ちの辞書（『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店）には記載がありませんでしたが、「太陽太陰の、月と太陽の」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典第4版』小学館）とありました。単語の一部である“luni”は「月」（『ランダムハウス英和大辞典』）、“solar”は「太陽の」（『G4』）という意味があります。後者はソーラーパネルなどで、日本語でもお馴染みでしょうか。そのため今回の“lunisolar Chinese calendar”は、「太陰太陽暦」と言います。私のアルバイト先では特に海外からの観光客の方々をお迎えすることが多いのですが、最近は中国人の方がさらに増えているように感じます。（Green）
