ブラジルでジカ熱の流行が深刻化しており、世界保健機関（ＷＨＯ）は１日、ジカ熱を国際的に懸念される公衆衛生上の緊急事態にあたると宣言しました。

The World Health Organization declared the Zika virus and its suspected link to birth defectsan international public health emergency on Monday, a rare move that signals the seriousness of the outbreak and gives countries powerful new tools to fight it.
An outbreak of the Zika virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, was detected in Brazil last May and has since moved into more than 20 countries in Latin America. The main worry is over the virus’s possible link to microcephaly, a condition that causes babies to be born with brain damage and unusually small heads. Reported cases of microcephaly are rising sharply in Brazil, ground zero for the disease, though researchers have yet to establish a direct link.
"ground zero"を取り上げます。「グランドゼロ」とカタカナでも馴染みがある言葉として使われていることがわかりました。意味を調べてみると『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「(核爆弾の)爆心地」「(変革の)中心地」とありました。LDOCEで確認すると"the exact place where a bomb explodes"と定義されています。
またこれは1945年に広島に原爆が投下された際の爆心地として使われた言葉で、2001年に発生したアメリカの同時多発テロで崩壊したビルの跡地などを指す言葉として用いられていることがわかりました。ここではブラジルがジカ熱の爆心地であると表現されているかと思います。(lua)
