Japanese team invents movable tongue prosthesis to enable speech for cancer victims
Dentistry researchers at Okayama University have come up with what could be the world’s first movable tongue prosthesis to help oral cancer patients who have partially lost the ability to speak.
The invention, the product of a team led by Shogo Minagi, a professor of dentistry at the university, is good news for scores of oral cancer victims in Japan with speech problems.
記事の中で幾度となく使われている“prosthesis”を取り上げたいと思います。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』を見てみると、「《医》補綴（ほてつ）、人工的補充物《義眼・義足など》、人工（補）装具」という意味があることが分かりました。LDOCEには“medical an artificial leg, tooth, or other part of the body which takes the place of a missing part”と定義されていました。
答えは分かったのですが、“pros”と“thesis”でなぜこのような意味になるのか気になり調べてみました。Online Etymology Dictionaryによれば、“prosthesis”はギリシャ語で"addition"を意味する“prosthesis”から来ているそうです。もともとこの語は“addition”を原義として「単語に文字やシラブルを加えること」という意味で使われおり、後に今回のような「人工補充物」という意味が登場したようです。今でも言語学で「《文法》語頭音添加」（『G4』）という意味があります。
さらに細かく見ていくと、ギリシャ語の“prosthesis”は“prostithenai”という語から発展したもので、“pros”は“to”を、 “tithenai”は“to put, place”を意味しています。“tithenai”は“thesis”だけでなく“theme”の語源でもあり、“to put, place”が“literally "something set down””などという意味に発展し、おなじみの「主題」という意味を持つようになったようです。
「置くこと」というもともとの意味がさまざまな語に発展していったことが分かりました。(bookmark)
