Quiz: How Well Would You Score on Japan’s National College Exam?
Over 560,000 students seeking to enroll in Japanese universities took the national standardized test this weekend, which covered subjects including history, math and science. In the English section, applicants were tested on reading comprehension, grammar and listening skills. All questions were multiple choice.

今回取り上げるのは、“fare”という表現です。この単語は「（交通機関の）運賃、料金」といった名詞での意味でおなじみだと思います。しかし、記事を見ても分かるように、今回の場合では“fare”が動詞で用いられていることが分かります。そこでLDOCEで調べてみると、“to be successful, unsuccessful etc”と定義されていました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4』（大修館書店）で確認してみると、「〈人が〉暮らす、やっていく」といった意味が記載されていました。この単語は「行く」が原義であるため、そこから発展して上記の意味や名詞の「運賃」を意味するようになったと考えられます。(ninetails)
