Police in Sapporo, Hokkaido, on Tuesday arrested an unemployed 25-year-old man on suspicion of violating the Firearms and Sword Control Law after he threatened to kill himself with a box cutter because he was distraught over the death of British singer David Bowie.
Tomoki Shiota was observed holding the box cutter on a sidewalk in front of a shipping delivery company where he used to work, at around 4:50 p.m. on Monday, Sankei Shimbun reported.
ここで取り上げるのは“distraught”です。「〔心配・嘆きなどで〕取り乱した（distracted）、困惑した〔with, at, by〕」（『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店）、“so upset and worried that you cannot think clearly”（LDOCE）という意味があります。心配していた、嘆いていたというより、さらに取り乱したというニュアンスもあるようです。（Green）
