The Tokyo Fire Department held its New Year fire review at Tokyo Big Sight in Koto Ward on Wednesday, with about 2,800 people, mainly firefighters, taking part in the annual event.

Members of the Edo Firemanship Preservation Association performed magnificent acrobatic stunts atop ladders, wowing the crowd. The association carries on the traditions of firefighting from the Edo period (1603-1867).

A ceremony was also held to introduce a newly established helicopter unit that will perform rescue operations. The team members conducted a drill in which they used ropes to rappel to the ground from a helicopter.

“I want to work hard with other officials to make Tokyo the safest and most secure city in the world,” said department chief Jun Takahashi at the event.

Longman English Dictionary Onlineでは“to go down a cliff or rock by sliding down a rope and touching the rock or cliff with your feet”と紹介がされています。

(Chris)
