do-gooder

2015年も早いものでもう残り12日となってしまいました。今年も様々な出来事がありましたが、世界的に見るとあまり明るい一年だったとは言えません。しかしそんな中でも今年は素晴らしい年だったと言える7つの理由がCNNに挙げられています。その一つが開発途上地域の極度の貧困を半減させるという目標を達成したことです。

There are half as many extremely poor people in the world as there were at the turn of the century. Unless you're a professional do-gooder, you might not have paid much attention to the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals, so here's a cheat sheet: Back in 2000, world leaders set out eight ways they were going to try to fight poverty over the next 15 years. One goal was to "eradicate extreme poverty," defined as living on less than $1.25 a day. This year, the UN reported that the number of people that poor had fallen from 1.75 billion in 1999 to 836 million today. And the percentage of people in developing countries that poor fell from 37% in 1999 to 14% now.

取り上げるのは“do-gooder”です。

『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版（大修館書店）』には「《英略式》空想的社会改良家；独善的な事業家」という意味がありました。『英辞郎on the WEB』によると、「通例、口先だけの、偉ぶったなどのニュアンスで軽蔑的に用いられる」そうです。Macmillan Dictionaryには“someone who always tries to help people, especially people who are poor or in trouble. This word is used as a criticism, to suggest that their help is unnecessary or uns

uitable”と定義されています。
「極度の貧困の半減」というのはMDGs（ミレニアム開発目標）が掲げた8つの目標のうちの一つにあたり、かつて世界の貧困人口の6割を占めていた中国とインドの目覚ましい発展が今回の目標達成の背景にあるようです。

“do-gooder”を調べていくうちに、以前海外ドラマを見ていて知った“goody-two-shoes”という表現を思い出しました。これは「善良[信心家]ぶった（人）；めめしい（男）」(G4)という意味があり、“goody-goody”と同義表現です。LDOCEには“someone who tries hard to be very good and helpful in order to please their parents, teachers etc - used especially by children to show disapproval”とあり、ドラマでも子どもが学校で「いい子ぶっている」という意味で使われていました。(bookmark)
