取り上げる表現は“close second”です。
これは文字通り、「近い」「二番目」ということで「僅差の［1位との差がほとんどない］（第）2位」（英辞郎on the WEB）という意味になります。LDOCEには“a close second/third etc“で”a finishing position in a competition that is very nearly second, third etc”と定義されていました。記事にもあるように“come a close second”の形で「（競技などで）僅差の２位となる」（『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版（大修館書店）』）となります。
対義語として、大差がついた２位を表すときは“a distant second”となります。
勝負事で,「僅差で」負けた、勝ったなどと言いたいときに使う表現としては、“by a narrow margin”、“by a razor-thin margin”、“slim chance of”、“by a neck”などさまざまで言い方で表すことができます。(bookmark)
