本日は、Oxford Dictionariesの記事より表現を拾います。サイト内にあるOED Timeline Challengeは簡単なクイズゲームのようなもので、英語の言葉がいつ英語に入ってきたのかを学ぶことができます。

OED timeline challenge: can you guess when these words entered the English language?

The Oxford English Dictionary team is continuously researching the histories of words, and it is therefore possible that we will find an earlier sense of the words during our research.

本日は記事より、"fair-weather friend"を取り上げます。OD見ますと"noun: A person whose friendship cannot be relied on in times of difficulty."とあります。『研究社 和英中辞典』には「まさかの時に頼みにならない人」とあり、『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』には「成功している時だけ友達面している人」とあります。どちらの意味にもなるようです。"fair-weather"のみでは「《非難して》［名詞の前で］晴天の時だけの、都合のいい時だけの、調子のいい＜友達など＞」となります。(『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』) "fair"に関しては以前、Shoheiさんによって取り上げられていました。(http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20101219/1292723101)
なお、この表現は17世紀初めに英語の表現として初めて使われたそうです(OD)

実際にこのクイズゲームにチャレンジしてみましたが、なかなか予想と違い難しいです。
"mobile phone" は以外と最近の言葉だと思い、2004年選んだのですが、1945年が初出だと知りました。"spaceship"は1880年、"Wi-Fi"は1999年、"internet"は1974年とありました。"computer"は当然新しいものと思っていましたが、1613年であり、もともとは"a person who makes calculations or computations"を意味したと解説にあります。英語の言葉をまた異なった観点から見られ、とても新鮮でした。言葉がいつ出てきたかということは、時代を表していることがあるのだと気付かされました。(Dew)
