father 復習

UG先生から教えて頂いた記事から取り上げます。元・光GENJIの大沢樹生さんと、女優・喜多嶋舞さんの間の長男が、大沢さんの実子なのか問題になっていました。

Ex-leader of Hikaru Genji not father of Kitajima’s son

The Tokyo Family Court has ruled in favor of actor and former pop idol Mikio Osawa, who had denied any biological connection with the son he allegedly fathered with actress and ex-wife Mai Kitajima.

The case went to court last month after Osawa, former leader of the all-boy idol group Hikaru Genji, conducted a DNA test in 2013 to prove he is not the son’s biological father – a claim Kitajima, 43, objected to.

今回取り上げるのは“father”です。「父親」を意味する単語としておなじみですが、今回は動詞として使われています。“father”は動詞では「＜男が＞＜子＞をもうける」（『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店）、“to become the father of a child by making a woman PREGNANT:”（LDOCE）という意味があります。恥ずかしながら、動詞としても使えることを知らなかったので、少し驚きました。関連して、“mother”も動詞として使うことができ、意味は「＜女性・動物の雌が＞…を産む；…の母になる、（母親として）…の世話をする、＜子供＞を甘やかす、過保護に扱う」（G4）、“to look after and protect someone as if you were their mother, especially by being too kind and doing everything for them”（LDOCE）とありました。このように簡単な名詞でも、動詞として使うことが出来ると知らない単語が他にも数えきれないほどあると思うと、まだまだ簡単な単語も見直す必要があると痛感します。（Green）
