Laurie Yasui, 64, of Kansas City, said her father, Minoru Yasui, would be “up on his soap box, stomping his feet and shaking his fist” because of the political response to the Paris attacks. She and other relatives will be at the White House on Tuesday when her father and 16 others, including baseball greats Willie Mays and the late Yogi Berra, are honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

今回取り上げる表現は、“be on one’s soap box”です。“soap box”は、以前先生に教えて頂いた表現で、「即席の街頭演説台」という意味です。では、“be on one’s”と共に用いられることで意味がどのように変わるのか。『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館書店）を確認してみると、「活発に意見の言える立場にいる」と記載されていました。さらに、Cambridge Dictionaryをみると、“to express your opinions about a particular subject "と定義されていました。
また、同じ文に、“stomping his feet”と“shaking his fist”があります。この二つの表現も見ていきます。二つの意味を確認していくと、“stomp one’s feet”には、「地団駄を踏む」、“shake one’s fist”は、「こぶしを握る」とあります。この二つは、怒りを表す表現として用いられることがあり、Laurieさんの父は、シリア難民の受け入れ反対や隔離に怒りを感じていたかもしれないということが捉えられると思います。
