今回取り上げるのは、“jaywalker”という表現です。この語の元の形である“jaywalk”をLDOCEで調べてみると、“when someone walks across a road at a place where it is dangerous to cross”という定義が見つかりました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』で確認してみると、「｟主に米略式｠交通規制〔信号〕を無視して横断する人」といった意味が載っていました。語源を調べてみると、「都会に来たばかりの田舎者は、交通ルールを無視して道路を横断する」というところから来ているようです。また、“jay”は「カケス」という鳥で、同辞書には「カラス科の鳥；地面を斜めに跳びはねる」という記載がありました。この定義から考えてみると“jaywalk”の意味が理解しやすいです。(ninetails)
