New York Todayにあったキャンパス内のマグノリアの植え替えをめぐる，なんでもないといえばなんでもない記事なのですが，live to see another dayという言い回しにこころが反応しました。

Today, at Barnard College, one beloved tree lives to see another day: a magnolia tree, currently nicknamed “Maggie” and long a touchstone for the Barnard community, will be moved to make way for a new “teaching and learning” center.
The tree, an explosion of pale pink when in bloom, was planted around 60 years ago, according to the college.
The timing of today’s move depends on the weather, but a crane will lift the tree to its new home, about 30 feet away.
これは直訳すると「他の日をみるために生きる」ですが，アルクの英辞郎には「明日を楽しみに生きる」と訳されていました。植え替えによりこのキャンパスのシンボル・ツリーは，再び新たな「生」を受け（そしておそらくは長らえる），ずっとシンボルであり続けることをlive to see another dayと表現するところに英語の深みを感じた次第です（わたしだけでしょうか）。先生はlive to fight another dayという類似表現もあるよと教えてくださいました。こちらの方は一旦は辛苦をなめたが，何時の日か捲土重来を期して...というニュアンスがあるそうです。（しおり）
