ハーマン・メルヴィル『白鯨』から164年、抽象絵画を代表するフランク・ステラがこの長編小説をもとに作成した作品がWhitney Museum of American Art.にて展示されています。New York Today から取り上げます。

New York Today: Or, the Whale

Good morning on this brisk Friday the 13th.
One of the first lines in “Moby-Dick; or, The Whale” is “Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul ... then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can.”
Now that it is November, both in soul and out, and the 164th anniversary of the book’s American publication, we account it high time for a marathon reading of Herman Melville’s whaling epic.
One begins today at 11 a.m. and lasts (with a break) until Saturday night, at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
The literary marathon is set alongside the Frank Stella retrospective that features works from the artist’s “Moby Dick” series of aluminum reliefs.

今回取り上げる表現は “marathon”です。走る意味の「マラソン」ではなく、「長期間続く仕事、活動」であることが分かりました。（Ｇ4大修館書店）LDOCEでは “an activity that continues for a long time and needs a lot of energy, patience, or determination.”と書かれています。
