Shohei Otani struck out 10 batters over six scoreless innings as Japan beat South Korea 5-0 in the opening game of the Premier12 baseball tournament on Sunday.
Otani, billed as Japan’s ace, lived up to expectations in the game played at Sapporo Dome. The 21-year-old right-hander notched three consecutive strikeouts in the fifth inning after South Korea had runners at first and second with no outs.
The quadrennial tournament, which features the top 12-ranked nations, is being organized by the World Baseball Softball Confederation.
Japan enters this year’s event as the top-ranked team followed by the United States and Cuba.
The United States, comprised of players from the farm systems of Major League Baseball teams, plays its first game on Nov. 10 against the Dominican Republic in Taiwan.
とりあげる表現は“live up to”です。
live up toは「〈期待などに〉添う、〈約束・評判など〉に恥じない行動をする」という意味です。英英を確認してみると、“to do as well as or be as good as other people expect you to --- OLD”とありました。この表現に使われているupはkeep up withやcatch upにも用いられている「（水準などに）達して、追いついて」という意味です。この一節はそのまま「日本のエースとして期待に応えた」と解釈できるかと思います。
6回2安打無失点と文句なし内容で視察に訪れていたMLBのスカウト陣も絶賛のピッチングだったようです。1回にはコースは外れたものの会場をどよめかす今季最速の１６１キロをマークしました。（野球小僧）
