“kaleidoscopic”を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典(大修館書店)』によると「絶えず変化する」「万華鏡の」という意味がありました。今回はもちろん、「絶えず変化する」という意味をとり、戦場という言葉に続きますが、あの模様が綺麗な万華鏡のことも指すことがわかり、驚きました。語源を調べてみると、ギリシャ語でkalos「美しい 」、eidos「形」、そしてskopeo「見ること」から来ているようです。
ロシアが介入するなど、状況はさらに悪化していく中で、戦闘ではなく協力のための介入をすることの難しさとこの問題の行く末はどこにあるのかと疑問に思いました。(lua)
