Platinum fails to fill breach left by gold in South Africa
When South African miner Papi Soke went from gold to platinum, he thought he was trading a sunset industry for one with a brighter future.

This month, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) shop steward was one of over 800 workers laid off at the Eland platinum mine, closed by Glencore.

"I don't know what to do now. I am thinking of maybe going to a diamond mine," the 34-year-old father of two, whose wife is expecting in December, told Reuters as he sipped juice in a mall in the mining town of Brits north of Johannesburg.

sunset industryを取り上げます。『オーレックス英和辞典』第２版（旺文社）には「斜陽産業」（--“an old industry that has started to become less successful” OALD8）という意味でした。注目すべきは、英英辞典の定義の中の、has started to becomeです。記事を見ればお分かりの通りで、「はじめは儲かると思い乗り出したものの、外的要因が重なり、今はどん底に追いやられそうである」ということが読み取れます。ゼミでも扱ったVWのニュースが、このようなことに影響するとは、考えてもみませんでした。
