両親が離婚してしまう原因が自分なのではないかと心配になり、母であるKateにKevinが聞くシーンから表現を取り上げます。会話に登場するBuzzとMeganはKevinの兄と姉にあたります。

Kevin: Did he leave because of me?
Kate: No, of course not.
Kevin: I knew it! It was Buzz and Megan.
Kate: It wasn’t anyone or any one thing.
Kevin: Then, what was it?
Kate: That’s not easy to explain. But sometimes, when people are married for a long time…they get into kind of a rut. Know what a rut is?
Kevin: Yeah, like when people aren’t having any fun…and they’re really bored.
Kate: Kind of like that. Now, will you come downstairs…when you’re ready?

今回取り上げるのは“get into kind of a rut”です。辞書で“rut”を引いてみると“get into [out of] a rut”「型にはまった単調な生活になる［から抜け出す］」（『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店）とありました。吹き替えでは「マンネリになる」と言っていました。長い結婚生活にマンネリを感じてしまったようです。ちなみに「マンネリ」は「マンネリズム【mannerism】」の略で、「手法が型にはまり、独創性や新鮮味がないこと」（goo国語辞書）だそうです。（Green）
