in the pink

映画「フィラデルフィア物語（1940）」から表現を取り上げます。

キャサリン・ヘプバーンが扮する主人公トレイシーの結婚式の前日に、ケイリー・グラントが演じる前夫のデクスターがやってきました。喧嘩別れをしたということもあり、トレイシーは全く歓迎していません。ここではいきなりやってきたデクスターとトレイシーと妹のダイアナ（ダイナ）、この2人の母親の4人の会話の場面の一部を取り上げます。

Dinah: Dexter, you've come back!
Dexter: Ah, Dinah, my dream girl!
Tracy: What in the name of...
Mother: No, it can't be. He went to South America for two years.
Dexter: Edward said they were at the swimming pool.
They seem to be here.
Mother: Dexter, don't you know that tomorrow is the wedding?
Dexter: Oh, that's right. So it is.
Tracy: You can go right back where you came from!
Dexter: Can't. Dinah says it's awful here without me.
Hello, you sweet thing. Red, you look in the pink.
You don't think I'd miss your wedding, do you?
Mother: Dexter, you wouldn't.
Tracy: I'm not so sure he wouldn't.
Dexter: No, Mother Lord, I wouldn't. I assure you I wouldn't.

今回取り上げる表現は裏ゼミでUG先生に教えていただいた表現でもある “in the pink”です。G4（大修館書店）で意味を確認してみますとこれで「《やや古略式》健康そのもので」とありました。もともと英語では“pink”に対する印象が日本とは異なり、同じくG4では「赤ん坊の肌を連想させ、健康・若さ・活力・純真・新鮮さを象徴する」意味がありました。LDOCEでは “old-fashioned in very good health”と書かれていました。（Inaho）
