鬼怒川の堤防決壊に続いて、11日朝には宮城県にある渋井川の堤防が決壊し大きな被害をもたらしています。
“burn its banks”という表現がブログですでに取り上げられましたが、CNNでは”levee”という語が使われています。

LDOCEで“levee”を調べてみると”a special wall built to stop a river flooding”という定義があり、『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版（大修館書店）』では「土手、堤防《洪水の結果できた土手や洪水防止用の人工堤防》」という意味がありました。
“bank”との違いが気になったので調べてみると、”bank”は”land along the side of a river or lake”（LDOCE）や”a raised area of land along the side of a river”(Macmillan Dictionary)のように「土手」や「川岸」のイメージが強いのに対して、”levee”は”a low wall built at the side of a river to prevent it from flooding”(Oxford Learner’s Dictionary)や”a wall made of soil or other materials that is built next to a river to stop the river from overflowing” というように川の氾濫を避けるための「堤防」を主に意味していることが分かります。

今もなお、行方不明者や建物に取り残された方々がたくさんいることを思うと胸が痛みます。少しでも早く安心して暮らせる日々が戻るのを祈るしかありません。(bookmark)
