東日本大震災によって起きた原発事故から約4年半が経過する前に、東京電力は廃炉作業の現場を報道陣に公開しました。汚染水の濃度処理は進んだ一方で、現在貯水してある総量は70万トンに迫る勢いだそうです。

Nearly 700,000 tons of radioactive water stored at Fukushima plant

Almost 700,000 tons of radiation-contaminated water have accumulated at the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co. disclosed Sept. 4.
The water is stored in rows of massive tanks on the plant’s premises.
Contaminated water has been a persistent problem since the 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster triggered a triple meltdown at the plant, resulting in a vast amount of radiation being spewed from the facility.

TEPCO has also worked to replace flange-type bolted storage tanks that are susceptible to leakage with welded tanks to reduce the risk of accidental seepage.

今回取り上げるのは、“flange-type”という表現です。これは貯水タンクの構造を表していて、日本語で「フランジ型」を意味しています。LDOCEで“flange”を調べてみると、“the flat edge that stands out from an object such as a railway wheel, to keep it in the right position or strengthen it”という定義が見つかりました。また『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』には、「（車輪の）輪縁、（管の端の）つば、耳」といった意味が載っていました。画像などでタンクをよく見てみると、円柱状の部品からはみ出るように出っ張った部分があるのが確認できました。この箇所をつなぎ目にして、組み立てていると分かりました。(ninetails)
