Olympic logo not a rip-off, trademarked designs thoroughly checked, says selection chief
The draft Tokyo Olympic emblem was modified to avoid it resembling trademarked designs, but it never looked like the logo of a Belgian theater, the emblem selection committee chief has said as he waded into a plagiarism storm.
“It appeared that there were registered trademarks that resembled the draft design,” Kazumasa Nagai, 86, told The Asahi Shimbun in his first media interview since the fiasco unfurled. “So, (Kenjiro) Sano’s design went through slight modifications several times at the request of the organizing committee, including moving some of its parts within a scope which does not undermine the original image.”

今回取り上げるのは、“rip-off”という表現です。LDOCEで調べてみると、“music, art, films etc that are rip-offs copy something else without admitting that they are copies”という定義が見つかりました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』で確認してみると、動詞の“rip off”が見つかり、そこから名詞で「（人の文章・音楽・映画などの）盗作、著作権侵害」を意味していると分かりました。(ninetails)
