 ヨーロッパの移民問題に関する記事です。7月だけでもEUに入国した移民は107,500名にも上ったそうです。移民数がこのペースで増加すれば,今年1年で,75万人に達するそうです。この数は,急激な増加であり,保護施設のキャパシティが必要量に追い付いておりません。移民問題の背景には,シリアやバルカン半島等の治安の悪化が挙げられます。
 取り上げたい単語は,"squat"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』(三省堂)によると「しゃがむ,うずくまる,《他人の建物・土地に》無断で住みつく, 不法に居座る,(ぺたりと)座る」などという意味がありました。今回は,座るという意味で使われております。「しゃがむ,うずくまる」といった意味は"crouch"にもありますが,"crouch"の定義が"Adopt a position where the knees are bent and the upper body is brought forward and down, typically in order to avoid detection or to defend oneself"といったように,隠れたり,防御のためにする行為であるのに対して,"squat"は,動作そのものを指しているようです。(Ume)

Europe migrant crisis: Surge in numbers at EU borders

This is Berlin's reception centre, where refugees come to register for housing and benefits. But it is volunteers who provide food, water, clothing and medical help. A doctor holds a makeshift surgery in a tent.
