flying carに関するThe Telegraphに関する記事を1つ採り上げます。
今回拾うとは見出しのuponです。辞書には(almost) upon Aで「〈時出来事などが〉A〈人〉に迫って, 近づいて」とあります(『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館)。さらに,同辞書にはChristmas is upon us.(もうすぐクリスマスだ)という用例が挙げられていました。以上から見出しも「車が空を飛ぶ時代は目前?」と解釈できます。(Koyamamoto)

Ah, the future. Meals will be pills (delivered by personal robots, no doubt), living on the moon will be a reality and, of course, flying cars will be de rigueur. Yes, ever since the Curtiss Autoplane was unveiled at the Pan-American Aeronautic Exposition in New York in February 1917 we seem to be obsessed with the dream of making automobiles fly, with The Jetsons and Back to the Future keeping that excitement fuelled.
The Curtiss Autoplane was a triplane, using the wings from a Curtiss Model L trainer on an aluminum body that resembled a Model T Ford. It had three seats, with the pilot/chauffeur sitting in the front and two passengers side-by side in the rear.
