New York Today: The Heat Is (Almost) Off
Good morning on this still-hot-but-not-for-much-longer Tuesday.

We’re riding the heat wave out of town.

A blast of cooler air, coming in tonight, will keep temperatures down in the lower 80s for the rest of the week.

That’s slightly below normal for August, according to David Stark, a climatologist with the National Weather Service.

“This cold front is going to help us from seeing some of the hotter temperatures we’ve had over the last few weeks,” he said.

Even though it’s felt hot — really hot — we only had five days last month with temperatures of 90 or higher, which is one fewer than the average for the month.

In general, August is slightly kinder to those prone to wilting. Last year, the whole month saw only three days above 90 degrees, and it was, on average, 0.7 degrees cooler than normal.

But that doesn’t mean we’re out of the woods, or desert, which would seem more appropriate.
