NASAの無人探査機New Horizonsが打ち上げから10年近くを経て、冥王星に最接近しました。NASAの科学者たちは13日の時点で冥王星が推定よりも大きいということを明らかにしていました。
New Horizons: Nasa spacecraft speeds past Pluto
Nasa's New Horizons spacecraft has made the first visit to Pluto, speeding past at 14km per second.
Earlier, the space agency released the most detailed picture yet as it hurtled towards the dwarf planet on Tuesday.
The probe was set to grab more images and other data as it passed just 12,500km from the little world at 11:50 GMT (12:50 BST).
The spacecraft is currently out of contact with Earth as it continues its observations.

記事で気になった表現は “dwarf planet”です。”dwarf”という言葉からよく童話にでてくる小人を思い浮かべますが、ここではどのような意味で使われてるのでしょうか。G4（大修館）で確認してみますと”dwarf planet”で「〘天〙準惑星」という意味であることが分かりました。LODCEの “dwarf”には “a dwarf planet or animal is much smaller than the usual size”と書かれています。
以前にも “dwarf star”という表現で取り上げられていますが、これは「矮星」を指します。（Inaho）
